Redesigning RADx-UP.org

DCRI Achieves Stronger Website Engagement and Easier User Navigation with Daniel Developments

Facing an extreme deadline in March 2021, The National Institutes of Health (NIH) selected Duke Clinical Research Institute’s (DCRI) Research Engagement & Communications team to quickly launched its website RADx-UP.org, an online resource for critical public health guidance under RADx® Underserved Populations (RADx-UP), a federal program to ensure all Americans have access to COVID-19 testing. To improve the site’s functionality, Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) turned to Daniel Developments to spearhead the website’s redesign, focusing on community-engaged health workers and populations most affected by the pandemic.

Objectives

DCRI collaborated with Daniel Developments to further enhance RADx-UP.org’s usability to meet the urgent demand for credible, streamlined, and easy-to-access information.

Challenges

Daniel Developments identified challenges with the website’s search functionality, preventing visitors from easily accessing and retaining valuable resources that could support COVID-19 programs in their respective communities.

Solutions

Daniel Developments revised the website’s navigation and information architecture to support a more intuitive search of deep research content and data. Precise categorization and organization combined with newly redesigned pages made the website user-friendly and visually appealing, enhancing engagement and information dissemination.

Results

As an extension of DCRI’s team, Daniel Developments sought stakeholder feedback to inform each redesign stage. The Daniel Developments team recognized the importance of aligning the website’s functional and technical requirements with the program’s evolving mission. A complete content inventory and audit helped identify gaps and areas for improvement, ensuring that the redesigned website conveyed a cohesive message. Additionally, due to the sensitive nature of project data and research, Daniel Developments guided stakeholders and content developers on the proper practices and hosting environments for securing project data versus public information.

To enhance usability, Daniel Developments created a filtered Resources section designed to house the program’s research assets and community engagement collateral. This allowed users to access and utilize relevant resources efficiently.

RADx-UP.org’s shift to an intuitive and customer-centric navigation system significantly improved user experience, increasing user satisfaction and engagement.

● The average visitor session increased by 30 seconds to 2 mins, exceeding the industry average.
● 5,000 to 7,000 website visitors from NIH and surrounding DC-area quarter-over-quarter.
● Engagement increased by 6% with over 7,500 downloads of community-engagement collateral.

Users can now easily navigate the website, find relevant information, and access resources. Today, the website continues to achieve its objectives by promoting equitable access to COVID-19 testing and supporting community-engaged research.
